Keesey Technique

The painless, non-surgical treatment of internal hemorrhoids

The Keesey technique is a quick in-office procedure for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. Instead of using rubber bands to strangle hemorrhoidal tissue, the Keesey treatment is the application of a gentle electrical current to the hemorrhoid. Because this current is low-volt and delivered at a slow rate, patients experience slight pressure but no pain during treatment. This technique shrinks the tissue permanently, painlessly, and with minimal side effects, making it an excellent non-surgical option.

The patient is treated while laying on their left side, with the doctor seated next to them. After a quick and painless exam, using a small anoscope to visualize the hemorrhoidal tissue, treatment can begin. Each internal hemorrhoid requires approximately 5-10 minutes of treatment time to be resolved. Up to two sites can be treated in one visit. After the Keesey treatment, patients are able to return to normal daily activities with little, if any, discomfort.

The exact amount of treatment needed for each individual depends on the number of internal hemorrhoids and their severity.
Although patients often experience relief from their main rectal symptoms after 1-2 visits, the average chronic patient requires 4-7 sites to be treated in order to completely resolve symptoms. Response to treatment is also dependent upon overall health and the presence of other gastrointestinal or rectal disease. It is important to treat any underlying condition while also utilizing the Keesey technique in order to completely resolve the condition and prevent future hemorrhoids from forming.
